Moving Sand Pictures
Sand pictures became popular in the 1970‘s.  The idea was an improvement
from a dry sand sealed in glass that flowed from rotating the oval glass.
Today, with technology we have discovered fluid movements as you can see.

The sand picture seen above was made in 1982 and was a gift to a friend. When he passed away, the picture was returned to
me.  Half of the fluid had evaporated.  The sands were clumpy and dry.  With adjustments, it works fine and is still here to
remind me of the close bond of two friends.
Sand Pictures can and will last a lifetime if one takes some simple steps to care for
them. 1-    Keep away from uv rays from the sun. 2-  Keep away from exposure to
microwave or static electrical fields such as microwave ovens, television sets, desktop
computers, toasters, just to name a few. 3- Protect the glass from breakage.  4- It is
imperative to keep in mind that altitude, barometric pressure and natural evaporation
will effect sand pictures over time.  If your sand picture stops working see the section
about adjustments to correct the problem.
Adjusting Your Sand Picture

1-Remove the picture from its stand.   2-Remove the dowel pins.    3-
Shake the sand to one end of the picture away from the opening you
chose to use.  4-  Using a 3cc hypodermic  syringe with a 22 gauge
needle, 1-1/2” long, (which can be purchased at just about any drug
store), with the plunger pulled all the way back pierce the seal, remove
the plunger from the syringe.   Let the picture pull or push out air and
or fluid as it needs to balance with its environment.  5-  With the
pressure balanced, if air is needed you must remove some of the fluid.
The same holds up to fluid being needed.  The more air bubbles in the
sand picture, the slower it will run. The slower moving pictures form
sharp peaks.  With less air bubbles in the sand picture, the faster it will
run.  Faster pictures tend to form a wave-like effect.  The air bubbles
will fill about the space of a quarter placed in the corner of the picture
as seen in the photos below:

It has been made apparent that some pharmaceutical companies have company
policies against the sale of hypodermic syringes to the public. The best way
around this is to contact you local veterinary supply or farmer co-op to purchase
these supply.
